Faces of Leap201

Designed to replace the back-breaking and time-consuming work of hauling water from the well to the fields. A full irrigation set can reduce labor time to minutes and increase yields by 33%.

Moe Kaung village is located in Myanmar’s Dry Zone, it is either too dry to grow food or too wet, with flash floods caused by soil erosion and shrinking forests. Here, farmers often lack the technology to irrigate their land. Win Myint is an onion farmer, who has suffered from the steep costs of hiring day laborers. He stumbled upon the new drip irrigation system whilst visiting a nearby village in 2012. After consulting with Proximity’s representative, Win Myint made the decision to invest 31 USD into the new technology.

“Other products are in the market today and gone the next day. I know Proximity will be here tomorrow.”

Less than three months later, Win Myint was able to save 108,000 kyats (80 USD), as a result of not having to spend 10 USD/day on laborers. Having the irrigation system also meant that he could manage the farm full time, as he could stop driving his trishaw (a source of extra income) and could now dedicate more time and money into his farming business.
